TikToker Avani Gregg says CeraVe is her go-to cleanser.

CeraVe hosted its first-ever global livestream event in New York City last week where two world-class dermatologists and a social media sensation held a candid conversation about proper skincare routines, different skin types and the microbiome.

The event—#CleanseLikeADerm—was hosted by CeraVe cofounder Tom Allison, global head of professional dermatology and healthcare professional marketing for CeraVe Skincare, who re-introduced the two formulations that started it all in 2005: the Foaming Facial Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin and Hydrating Facial Cleanser for normal to dry skin.

CeraVe was among three other brands which included AcneFree and Ambi that were acquired via L’Oreal’s agreement with Valeant in early 2017 for $1.3 billion. The acquisition was part of Valeant’s $2.1 billion sale of assets in an effort to reduce debt.

Developed with dermatologists, CeraVe is one of the fastest-growing skincare brands in the US offering a slate of advanced skincare products including cleansers, moisturizers, sunscreens, healing ointments and a dedicated baby line. The brand’s multi-channel distribution strategy includes drug stores, mass and beauty retailers, and select online outlets.

Some 3,000 people from around the world tuned in on TikTok to watch the event, which drew dozens of participants and dermatologists from as far out as Washington State to Hudson Yards, NYC for a panel discussion that included board-certified dermatologists Dr. Dustin Portela and Dr. Michelle Henry and TikTok personality Avani Gregg.

Cleanser Confessions

The program was aimed at teaching viewers how to identify and break poor skincare habits and cleanse like a dermatologist to achieve their best skin. In a survey commissioned by the dermatologist-developed skincare brand, 77% of adults admitted that a dermatologist would not be pleased with their cleansing routine. During an exercise called “Cleanser Confessions” several audience members admitted to having skipped their cleansing routine all together—a skincare faux pas that the dermatologists agreed was the “worst” thing consumers can do to their skin.

Dr. Henry pointed out the pore-clogging oil, dirt, debris and makeup that builds up overnight along with environmental stressors like pollution can exacerbate hyperpigmentation, dark spots and inflammation in those with acne-prone skin.

“Although our mind is asleep at night, our skin isn’t. We still perspire,” said Henry, adding that bacteria can accumulate on pillows from unwashed skin and hair.

Some audience members said they use skincare products that are not formulated for their face. This result was in tandem with the 12% of people surveyed who did not use a dermatologist-approved cleanser, instead opting for a bar of regular soap. Dr. Henry added that she’s seen patients who have even tried dish soap to clean the oil off their heavily acned skin.

Other participants confessed to cleansing with hot water over the preferred warm water. This misstep, Dr. Henry said, could also disrupt the skin’s barrier.

Skin Type Assessment

Some people also admitted to not using a cleanser that corresponded to their specific skin type—normal, oily, combination, dry and sensitive. The dermatologists noted that the first step in a proper skincare routine is identifying the skin type and then finding the right cleanser suitable for treating those skincare concerns.

Dr. Daniel Sugai, a board certified dermatologist from Bellevue, WA, enjoys his ‘me time.’

“As a dermatologist, there’s a wide range of formulations and products, and we take the time to learn those so we can make thoughtful recommendations to our patients,” said Dr. Portela. “Because cleansing like a derm means choosing formulas and ingredients that are approved by a medical expert.”

CeraVe’s flagship products are its Foaming Facial Cleanser for normal to oily skin, Hydrating Facial Cleanser for normal to dry skin and Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser for normal to dry skin. They are formulated with ceramides and hyaluronic acid that fortify the skin’s barrier.

In the CeraVe survey, as many as 70% did not know their skin type and as a result, were not able to choose a suitable cleanser, thus compromising their healthy skincare journey.

“I consistently use a derm-approved cleanser and CeraVe is my go-to,” said Avani, who ascertained she had dry skin and not sensitive as she initially surmised upon taking an assessment that was offered to attendees onsite in New York City. “But I do see crazy TikTok hacks from time to time and I do try them.”

Washing the face twice-daily with a derm-approved cleanser for no longer than 60 seconds with gentle surfactants that do not disrupt the skin’s pH is key to attaining and sustaining healthy skin, Dr. Henry said.
